Nothing like a sharp cold snap to get us in the festive mood and full steam ahead for a merry Christmas.

 

In the Shop:

From parsnips, carrots, red cabbage and cranberries to chestnuts, spices, ready-made marzipan and icing and of course Brussel sprouts, that marmite of all vegetables, the shop is laden with top quality produce to cater for your guests.

  • Healthy – packed with vitamins A and C, iron, potassium and fibre.
  • Serve – raw, sliced thinly in a salad with hazelnuts, roasted with caraway seeds until crisp on the outside and tender inside, or boiled or steamed until just cooked with a little bite and served – tossed in melted butter with chilli flakes, or nutmeg, fennel seeds, toasted almonds, crispy bacon, lemon juice or chestnuts.
  • Do look out for sprouts sold on their stem as they keep fresh for much longer as continue to ‘live’ off the nutrients in the stem. The tops can be eaten too – use as greens shredded and tossed in butter or add to stews or soups.

Tasting – Cheese, Thursday 21 December

 

 

Ben our cheese man will be giving you the chance to try a few of our favourite festive cheeses:

Wookey Hole is the award-winning West Country Farmhouse cheddar produced from milk sourced only from Dorset; handmade it is then aged for up 3 months in Wookey Hole Caves, an ancient tradition that gives the cheese its delicious rich and distinctive nutty and tangy flavour.

 

Colston Stilton – this perfect award-winning Stilton is handmade by Colston Bassett Dairy which has been making traditional cheeses for over 100 years.  It has a rich cream colour with blue veining throughout and smooth, creamy mellow flavour with no sharp acidic taste from the blue.  Melt in the mouth, it is always popular on the festive cheeseboard.

 

Gillot Camembert – handmade in Normandy from unpasteurised cows’ milk, this is a rich and creamy cheese with robust flavours when aged.  Fantastic as it is but also perfect baked.

 

Corney & Barrow wines

If you’re looking for wine ideas for the big day Gil our wine guru recommends:

 

 

Aperitif – whether its Champagne or Prosecco, a cold glass of something sparkling always goes down well whilst the finishing touches are made to dinner, it suits both the festivities and range of nibbles.

 

Starter – A light starter of fish, chicken or perhaps a fennel & orange salad require a light, fresh white wine like the Il Barroccio Bianco from Veneto in the north-east of Italy.  This wine has notes of camomile and white peaches which would complement the flavours of the starter and the crisp, lively acidity on the finish will keep proceedings on course.

 

Turkey – Gil likes to go traditional and highly recommends a good Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, if you prefer red.  The use of oak is key with Chardonnay and he suggests the Petit Chablis from Domaine Millet with its stony, mineral characters.  There are hints of honey and cream but the palate remains tangy and crisp.

For a red, the Bourgogne Pinot Noir from Domaine Cyrot-Buthiau is an absolute treat.  Pretty, perfumed aromas of red and black berries are matched with crushed forest fruits, earth and spice on the palate.  All of which work beautifully with the turkey and especially the trimmings.

 

Christmas Pudding – Port is the order of the day here and one that has bundles of youthful energy like the Corney & Barrow Ruby Port sourced from Cristiano Van Zellar.  This wine is matured for three years and is great drunk lightly chilled with the pud.

 

Fresh Christmas Trees

Two varieties of freshly cut trees; the Nordmann Fir – popular for its soft foliage, even shape, strong branches and non-drop glossy dark green needles and traditional Norway Spruce.  We will net them for you and carry to your car – we also have tree stands.

Festive Afternoon Tea

Who can resist a good traditional afternoon tea – our festive one has a few twists. Begin with a warming shot of mulled wine or glass of Prosecco before choosing one of our eight loose leaf teas or coffee.  A selection of delicious finger sandwiches and seasonal savoury bites will complement the sweet treats such as vanilla and chocolate choux buns, Christmas trifle and mini mince pies.

Available from 12 noon, Mondays – Saturdays until Saturday 30 December.

£23.95 per person includes a welcome drink.

£20.95 per person without the alcoholic welcome drink
