July’s news – summer fruits, gooseberries & more

4th July 2018

July 2018 Newsletter

What a glorious summer – when did we last have this wonderful wall to wall sunshine.  Our soft fruits are certainly benefitting from the warmth with a very sweet strawberry crop, the raspberries are ripe and delicious too and the PYO is open just for raspberries now.  Other British seasonal fruit to make the most of include the fat juicy cherries and gooseberries – these hairy little gems are a real treasure.  One of the oldest British berries, grown since the 13th century, they are prized for the sharp sauvignon blanc flavours that work so well in fools, pies, crumble, cheesecakes, sorbet as well as with fish.  They are though in danger of disappearing due to lack of demand, please do look out for them – one of our favourites.

It’s bonanza time for tasty British veg too, with all the varieties of English lettuces, – oakleaf, webbs, cos, little gem, lollo rosso as well as peas, broad beans, vine tomatoes and radishes – apparently the new trendiest food to challenge the avocado as we search for ways to jazz up salads.

The soft summer stoned fruits are in abundance -peaches and doughnut peaches, nectarines and apricots.

Pearce’s Meadow Food

We were so pleased to open our pizzeria, offering you the chance to enjoy a freshly cooked pizza whilst sitting out in the meadows. However, we weren’t entirely satisfied as we were unable to deliver our usual high standards and quality of service in which we take such pride – we therefore took the difficult decision to close it.

Now we are offering good, simple flavoursome food made with top quality ingredients that we can serve you quickly.  Such as, finest sausages and bacon served in a choice of rolls, breakfast fare of granola and fresh fruit, freshly prepared summery salads, light bites and sweet treats like tray bakes.

Still served from the horsebox on compostable plates and bowls, you can sit out at the benches and enjoy the views and the kids can run around.

There’ll also be a selection of soft drinks, wine, bubbly, beer as well as fresh coffee and tea.

Open Saturdays and Sundays initially, from 9.00am until 30 minutes before closing.

We look forward to welcoming you and thank you for all your support.

In the Shop

Our home-made meringues are flying off the shelves – such a great instant pud with strawberries and cream.  If you enjoy making your own though a tip from Dan is not to slowly add the sugar as many cook books instruct, but to whip the whites very very firm and put all the sugar in at once, and just give 3 more turns of the whisk before cooking at a very low temperature.

Gifts Candles & Diffusers

Treat yourself to the new Charles Farris luxury candles and diffusers.  Made in England the scented candles are made with unique essential oils and fragrance, wrapped in lovely textured glass or their signature tin and filled with hand-poured wax.  The beautifully designed glass reed diffusers help to create a very special ambiance through the home too.

Mugs & Jugs

Can you ever have too many – we don’t think so!

Look out for the enchanting fine bone china mugs from Two Bad Mice Company, charmingly illustrated inside and out.

Gisela Graham’s ceramic jugs with simple stylish designs to brighten up any table and lovely as a vase.

In the Garden

If you’re still looking for summer plants, a fine selection includes the Camelot Cream foxgloves, curly wurly hydrangeas, echinacea, dahlia, sunpatiens, fuschia and the attractive standard patio roses.

Our our own freshly cut flowers are now available – glorious bunches of cornflower, delphiniums, godetia, zinnia.

Cheeses of the Month

It’s a trio of Welsh cheeses this month that carry the 20% discount. All made by Abergavenny Fine Foods who blend extra ingredients to the cheese whilst it matures for extra quality and superb taste.

Harlech (v) – a mature, mild creamy cheddar made with pasteurised cows’ milk and blended with fresh horseradish and parsley that gives it an extra ‘bite’ with a peppery, fresh, zingy flavour.  The cheese is then coated in a distinctive bright orange coloured wax.  It is named after the famous Welsh Warriors of the Middle Ages.  As the horseradish makes it the perfect partner for beef, try melted on steak or burger or in a cold roast beef sandwich.

Rob, our wine guru from Corney & Barrow recommends the Ortega from Biddenden Vineyards with this cheese – a Decanter & IWSC bronze award winner in 2017 and lovely off-dry, fresh expression from Kent. Being naturally lower in alcohol than some fuller white varietals, this will go with the simple spice and pepperiness that the cheese is blended with and makes it a wonderfully summer pair, when paired alone.

Y-Fenni (v) – mature cheddar cheese made from pasteurised cows’ milk and blended with whole-grain mustard and Welsh ale and then coated in a pale yellow wax.  It has a full tangy mustard flavour, moist texture, pale-yellow colouring speckled with the mustard grains. As well as being part of a cheeseboard, it melts well and can be served on toast or in a white sauce.

Even though Rob recommended the Romanian Pinot Grigio Sanziana recently, he really loves it and can’t think of a grape that stands up better to mustard than this one. A very attractive pair, if not unusual, by themselves. But also a perfect fit for the cheese being melted down into a white sauce too – pale perfection!

Tintern (v) – this deliciously creamy mature cheddar has been blended with fresh chives and shallots and coated in an attractive green wax.  Tangy and irresistibly moreish, it is named after the village Tintern on the River Wye in Abergavenny. Just right for these summer days in the garden and its onion tang makes it perfect for a ploughmans lunch.

A clean sweep for the whites this month! The Marques de la Musa Chardonnay-Viura is an obvious choice as both varietals in the blend go so well with shallots, especially, and chive also, as well as with the creamy texture of the cheese. The wine is light and uncomplicated providing optimum refreshment and with something of its own tang and moreishness! Hopefully the first taste of this pair leaves you satisfied, though another glass and bite would not go unadvised!

Black Bomber (v) – the flagship cheese from the Snowdonia Cheese company also carries 20% discount – this award-winning cheese is a modern classic that marries a deliciously rich flavour with smooth creaminess that lasts long on the palette but remains demandingly moreish.
